Managing people’s perceptions of you in an online environment is just the first step to using your online presence to your professional advantage.
There are also a number of proactive ways to present your best self both online and in person. Two effective ways to promote the aspects of your professional self that you wish to put forward are through personal branding and an elevator pitch.
Online: Personal branding
Your personal brand communicates what you want people to know about you. A good personal brand must:
- be focused and concise
- be genuine and authentic
- tell a story about you
- create a positive impact
- be unique
- highlight your areas of expertise
- be adapted for different audiences.
In person: Elevator pitch
An elevator pitch is a quick summary of yourself. Think of an elevator pitch as a commercial and you are the product you are trying to sell. You have one minute to market yourself and convince someone that you are right for the job. You need to have an elevator pitch prepared for when you are networking.
An elevator pitch highlights:
- What you have achieved
- What you want to achieve
- What makes you stand out from a crowd
- What you can do for the company.
When delivering your elevator pitch, speak slowly, clearly and expressively; stand confidently with your chest high and shoulders back; and look directly at the person you are speaking to and smile.
